The White Plains Girls Lacrosse team was the No. 4 seed in Section 1 Class A of the New York State playoffs. They advanced to the quarterfinal round, where they played against Carmel, the No. 5 seed. Therefore, the dynamic team had home-field advantage and were able to play their quarterfinal game on their own turf.
“I was nervous, but also excited. It was the first time in five years that White Plains varsity lacrosse had a home game for a playoff game, and I wanted to show the White Plains community that the girls lacrosse team can win,” said two-year varsity lacrosse player Kaitlyn Seguso. “I had the mindset to play like we had nothing to lose and everything to win.”
These words of motivation seemed to be the phrase playing in everyone’s head when the quarterfinal game began.
“Our biggest challenge was getting out of our heads and into a more positive mindset during games throughout the season,” team captain Sophia Gould said.
However, going into the quarterfinals and semifinals, the team put aside negative thoughts and truly played like “they had nothing to lose.”
After winning on their home field, the team advanced to the semifinals, playing Suffern. That game on May 30 concluded their season, with Suffern scoring two more points.
Sophia said one of the biggest factors behind the team’s success—and their best record in her four years at WPHS—was their strong team chemistry.
The team had winter workouts and winter league together and began preseason two weeks before the start of the initial season. Throughout that time, the respect they had for each other on and off the field contributed greatly to their teamwork on the field.
Their support for one another was evident when Caitlyn Hyatt, a three-year varsity player, reached her 100-point milestone and when they held their senior night for their senior lacrosse players.
Sophia said that the team’s game against Byram Hills in honor of the team’s seniors was filled with immense support from teammates and a huge crowd of fans.
The team’s most hard-fought and determined performance came in their game against Fox Lane, where they went head-to-head into overtime against the league champions. They came together as a team and remained positive from the time they stepped onto the field until the last couple of minutes.
Although the season came to a close in the semifinals, the 2025 Girls Varsity Lacrosse team proved that hard work does pay off and that remaining positive from the start of the game can lead to success—earning them one of the best records in recent years.
