It may seem hard to believe, but as Halloween approaches, fall sports are coming to a close. Volleyball, swim and cross country are just a few that have had successful seasons. Field hockey, however, has had an exceptional season.
Field hockey is a team contact sport, which according to captain Adriana Mancuso is similar to lacrosse and very underrated. “When you actually understand the game and the rules, it’s really fun to play” Mancuso said. She added that this is especially true with the team environment of the Tigers, which is close knit and supportive.
Mancuso noted that if field hockey were a combination of two sports, they would be lacrosse and ice hockey. How does field hocke compare to lacrosse? It is very similar, but with differences in gameplay, rules and gear types.
Goalie Mila Tomlin said that this season was both fun and successful, and was glad that the sport has been put back on the map, as it has been a few years since White Plains Field Hockey has been ranked.
“Our team is like a family, and I think that’s why we played so well. I know I had a great time as our team’s goalie,” Tomlin said. At White Plains High School, sports are as much about bonds as they are about the game, with upperclassmen shaping the team.
Reflecting on her season, Mancuso offered advice for next year’s players: “A message I would pass on for the girls next year would be to build a bond with your team because it creates great gameplay and chemistry.”
The chemistry was evident in this year’s varsity team. Captains McKenna Austin, Brooke Thomas, Francesca Marcotullio and Adriana Mancuso all worked together and played important roles in uniting and uplifting the team as a whole. They led everyone to work well together and bring home the win. Their season finished strong with a record of 13-1-1.
As we wrap up fall sports and start gearing up for winter sports, we are positive that the teams will continue to support one another, and are very proud of the hard work shown by all our athletes.
