The White Plains Public Library Edge Advisory Board recently received a $5,000 grant through the Youth Climate Action Fund to create a new seed library. The plan includes classes about plants, classes to answer individual questions and free seeds to grow on your own property. The Edge Advisory Board is excited to plan these positive improvements for the library.
When everything is running, the seed library will have a designated spot within the library, containing a cabinet where people can come in and grab packets filled with seeds of vegetables, herbs, flowers and more, depending on what each person is looking for. Then, there will be directions to guide people through the steps of planting the seeds. Throughout the year, there will be classes patrons can attend to see to their gardening dreams.
Currently, the planned programs will cover topics like “Adaptive Gardening” and “Seed Saving,” but the library is always open to suggestions and actively looking for new ideas. Another idea is to offer an opportunity for people to ask any question they might have, from “I have a shady yard, what do I do?” to “I can’t keep my plant alive, is there a way I can fix that?”
While the details are still being finalized, the library looks forward to offering programs in the spring and fall of 2025 and is working to get the seed library running as soon as possible. As this innovation slowly moves forward, the Edge Advisory Board plans and organizes, growing more thrilled with the idea the longer we wait.
