“A Minecraft Movie,” directed by Jared Hess and starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, should under no circumstance be taken seriously.** The movie follows a thin plot with keen references for veteran Minecraft players, as well as jokes and sing-alongs made specifically for kids. However, if one can find the joy in a movie full of memes, then “A Minecraft Movie” is made for you.
If the “Minecraft Movie” excels at anything, it’s keeping you entertained while watching. The chemistry between Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garett Garrison is a sight to see while they lead the charge against our antagonists, Malgosha and the piglins of the Nether. Eventually, every character gets to play a role in the battle for the Overworld against the raiding piglins.
As previously mentioned, the movie’s plot is very straightforward, but the creative and joyful moments throughout the movie are exactly what it needed to succeed. The infamous “Chicken Jockey,” said by Jack Black, is one of the most memorable moments of the movie, as well as the hit song “Steve’s Lava Chicken,” which somehow, someway, made it into the USA Hot 100 chart. The Minecraft references, specifically in YouTubers DanTDM, MumboJumbo, Aphmau, LDShadowLady, and of course the tribute to the late Technoblade, make the movie an unforgettable experience for gamers who grew up watching these content creators.
A sense of change, growing up, and the embracement of creativity are certainly seen as some of the movie’s themes as the film progresses. Emma Myers, playing Natalie, feels a responsibility to protect her brother, Sebastian Hansen, who plays Henry. Henry, on the other hand, is bullied daily at his new school due to his nerdy, creative personality, which ends up saving our protagonists on multiple occasions. Danielle Brooks, who plays Dawn, yearns for change and excitement in her life as she scraps for money, running a petting zoo while being a real estate agent in the real world.
Video game movies, whether you’re a fan of the genre or not, very clearly have a poor reputation when it comes to their success and reviews. The “Minecraft Movie,” despite some jokingly calling it a cinematic masterpiece, won’t be winning Oscars anytime soon. If you’re looking for the next Academy Award winner, you’re certainly better off looking elsewhere. However, none of that should take away from the laughs, memes, and memories made from one of the silliest movies in recent time.
