America Decided: Trump to Serve as 47th U.S. President

By Judah Goldemberg

A long and emotionally driven 2024 presidential campaign finally came to an end early on the morning of Wednesday, November 6 at 5:34 a.m. when the Associated Press called President Donald Trump’s electoral victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump will become the second United States president to serve two nonconsecutive terms in office. His running mate, J.D. Vance, will serve as the nation’s 50th Vice President.

After Donald Trump won the key battleground state of Wisconsin, it was clear that the race to victory was at the finish line. President-elect Trump won all seven swing states: Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, a state many Americans saw as the key to victory in this election.

Trump addressed the nation following his decisive victory, thanking his supporters in what he calls the greatest political movement in the history of our nation. Several world leaders have congratulated President Trump, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump has promised to end the conflicts within each of the regions governed by those leaders.

Vice President Kamala Harris addressed students at Howard University on November 6. Harris emphasized the importance of a peaceful transfer of power as a key pillar of American democracy.

Donald Trump surpassed 300 electoral votes and earned himself approximately 50% of the nation’s popular vote. It was a dominant victory for the former president and current president-elect. But what does a second Trump term entail?

President-elect Trump is no stranger to making big change. His first term brought the Trump tax cuts, a strict border policy that led to mass deportations, and a controversial response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his next term, Trump has promised to rebuild the economy, hoping to build what he calls the “greatest economy in American history.” He has vowed to end the ongoing migrant crisis at the southern border, a situation that has spread throughout many parts of America. To combat this, Trump plans to utilize the U.S. Navy to enforce a blockade on Fentanyl-related crossings in American waters. Additionally, he has guaranteed mass deportations. He has also sought out funding to build the wall at the American border with Mexico.

One of the most pressing issues for voters this election was the economy. The Biden administration saw the biggest inflation increase in 40 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Americans also saw an increase in gas prices, largely in part to Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. In his second term, Donald Trump plans to make the Trump tax cuts permanent, boost domestic oil production, and impose significant tariffs on China. All these stated policies are an attempt to boost the economy, yet many economists have forecasted that the economy would have been better off under a Harris presidency.

Both the Harris and Trump campaign raised abundant resources on this campaign. Kamala Harris raised over $1 billion in 107 days following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Billionaire Tesla and Space-X CEO Elon Musk formed a super PAC in support of Donald Trump. His PAC spent over $200 million on the Trump campaign. This election cycle was filled with big news events, including two attempted assassinations on Trump.

America has chosen a winner, and regardless of any personal opinions on the president-elect, it’s important that we continue to stress the values of American democracy and civic responsibility.
