The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Fight: The Most Disgraceful Fight in Boxing History?

By Suveer Sabharwal

The Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson fight has sparked intense criticism and controversy, with many calling it one of the most disgraceful events in boxing history. Mike Tyson, once known for his brutal power and dominance in the ring, is now 58 years old and dealing with serious health issues, including sciatica, a painful nerve condition that sometimes affects his ability to speak. Despite these challenges, Jake Paul insisted on facing Tyson. Jake Paul is a 26-year-old YouTuber and an MMA fighter who is in fit shape -- for this reason, many saw the fight as exploitative.

When the match started, Mike Tyson was not in his peak form as he was in his prime in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and he had trouble keeping up with Jake Paul. The Netflix stream itself was problematic because there were many technical difficulties with the stream making the fight seem long and frustrating viewers. Many fans of Mike Tyson who had hoped to see their hero defeat Paul and shut him down were disappointed. When they saw that Mike Tyson was not in his peak shape and was getting beaten up, fans took to social media, calling Paul a “disgrace” for fighting an elderly, sick fighter instead of someone in his own weight class and age group.

After eight rounds, Jake Paul declared victory over Tyson, but the fight ended under controversial circumstances. Tyson left the ring early, out of concern for his health and family. Despite his performance, Tyson made $20 million from the fight, which raises further questions about the motivations behind such an event.

This event raised serious questions about what conditions are acceptable for a boxing match to occur.
