With only two meetings so far, the WPHS K-pop Club is a relatively recent addition to our after-school options. Nonetheless, much enthusiasm and care have been put into forming this new club. Fans of K-pop now have a space free of judgment, enabling them to connect with peers over shared interests.
During the first meeting, students came up with potential activities on a piece of paper, then rotated groups. Around 30 students were present and suggested unique activities: learning dance choreography and challenges, name the song, karaoke, finish the lyrics, decorating photocards, and even a group trip to a pop-up event in NYC. To end the meeting, they created a specialized playlist from the songs students wrote down. Music videos played on the board, and members of the club enjoyed the remaining time left.
The next gathering allowed students to better get to know each other. As the collaborative playlist sounded, students were tasked with creating a personalized K-pop collage. Many chose to include concerts they had gone to, favorite K-pop groups or artists, and their biases (favorite member within a K-pop group). Students split into randomized groups to share and connect with people they might not have interacted with otherwise.
The president and creator of the WPHS K-pop Club, junior Charlotte Tortoriello, said that the ultimate goal of the club was to “promote K-pop/Korean culture” and “create a space for fans to not feel judged for their interests and connect with peers to create a stronger sense of community.”
