The annual Science Research Symposium at White Plains High School brought together students across all grade levels for an evening of project reviews and awards, and an inspirational talk from a familiar face.
The event began with students and attendees viewing the research boards of sophomore researchers. Several of these projects are already complete and will be entered into an upcoming competition this Saturday at Somers High School.
Following the board review, teacher Kimberly Fleming introduced alum and medical student Oscar Huttara, who returned to White Plains High School to speak about his research journey. Huttara shared his experience as a former student researcher in the very same program, offering the current students a look at where the path of inquiry can lead.
After the speech, Fleming presented the annual Science Spirit Awards to recognize effort and engagement in the program. This not only included students, but also Ms. Adamiak, former Head of Activities, who is retiring this year.
Science Spirit Awards were given to all grades and voted on by their fellow Science Research peers; recipients were Rayan Bertini, Judah Goldman, Esperanza Cylich-Schneider, Mahi Ayesha, Francis Fokoue-Nkoutche and Olivia Tuzel. Mrs. Fleming also presented the Dedicated Senior Award to Sabrina Bonelli for her outstanding growth during her time in the program.
Meanwhile, Mr. Martinez’s engineering pathway students—Lucy Wright, Eliana Lieber, Miles Ingram and Christopher Tandazo—showcased a functional piggy bank that can sort coins, demonstrating their practical design and building skills.
The symposium continued with formal introductions of juniors and seniors. Attendees then moved through various rooms, where juniors and seniors presented their research in full-length presentations. Each room featured a different set of topics, allowing guests to rotate and experience the depth of work being done across the upper grades.
The symposium was a success; it not only showcased the effort and research of the Science Research and engineering students but also the dedication of Mrs. Fleming, Mr. Martinez and the various other teachers who contribute to the success of the program.
