White Plains Football is back! After beginning last season 0-5, the Tigers are off to an incredible 4-2 start with wins over Poughkeepsie, Mount Vernon, Roy C. Ketcham, and East Ramapo. After a summer of rigorous workouts, they started off hot with a dominant 39-0 shutout victory over Poughkeepsie in their first game on just the second day of school. This set the tone for what the Tigers hope will be a season to remember.
“I feel like our season is going great,” said senior quarterback Isaiah Pierre. “My favorite part is playing with my team, my brothers, because I feel like they all look up to me and have my back when the game is on the line.”
Senior linebacker and defensive end Ethan Silliman gives the new coaching staff credit for the team’s success. “We’re wining games. We have a great mentality and vibe here, and I attribute it all to the new coaching staff.”
He also said that he loves the intensity and focus that the coaches bring. “We’re running a lot more complex plays and doing something different.”
The Tigers are currently in second place in their league, putting them in prime position to vie for a league championship.
“The whole time I’ve been in high school, we haven’t made a playoff game,” said senior linemen Daniel Appel. “To be able to win a league championship and make the playoffs in my senior year would mean a lot to me.”
Head Coach Kevin Martins said about a league championship, “I don’t want to think that far ahead.” He wants to take the season one game at a time, but he said winning a championship would be, “awesome for the community.”
The Tigers will face Yonkers Force, the team they’re tied with for second place, this Friday, October 13, at home. They note that home games are extra special because they thrive on the support of their fans.
“I love playing at the stadium in front of everyone: my friends, family, and all the supporters,” said senior running back Eddie Ryan.
Friday’s game is not just any game. It’s also Homecoming and Senior night, during which the team will honor its seniors with a pregame ceremony. In addition to the festivities, this game has major playoff implications that could define the rest of the season for the Tigers.
