Democrats swept most consequential contests in the first round of elections since President Donald Trump was elected into office last year. The election day after a presidential election typically reflects the public’s opinion of the party in power, so this year’s results indicate that the people may be becoming disillusioned with the Trump administration.
Close to home, Zohran Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, won mayor of New York City with 50.4% of the votes. He ran on a platform of affordable housing and protecting NYC’s immigrant community. His response to these issues could set an example for cities nationwide who have similar struggles. He has pledged to stand up to the Trump administration.

Mamdani’s major opponent was former governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Cuomo ran for mayor in an effort to rebuild his political career after resigning as governor in 2021 amidst allegations of sexual harassment.
Trump grudgingly backed Cuomo rather than the Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa, in an effort to block Mamdani from office. He suggested before the election that he may withhold federal funding from the city if Mamdani were to win.
Democrats also saw a victory in Virgina, where Abigail Spanberger won the race for governor against Republican Winsome Earle-Sears. Spanberger is a former CIA operative and will be the first female governor of Virgina.
“Just a few minutes ago, Adam said to our daughters… ‘Your mom is going to be the Governor of Virgina.’ I can guarantee those words have never been spoken in Virigina before,” she said in her victory speech.
Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, became governor-elect of New Jersey after a tight race with Republican Jack Ciattarelli.

California’s Prop 50, a redistricting measure led by Governor Gavin Newsom, passed by a wide margin. The goal of this effort was to redraw congressional lines in California in an attempt to counteract redistricting in Texas. The Texas redistricting will likely give more seats in the House of Representatives to the Republicans. Both Texas and California hold so many seats in the House that their electors could change which party is in power.
Many see Newsom, who has made himself the face of Prop 50, as a good candidate for president come 2028.
The overwhelming shift towards Democratic leadership this election may reflect a growing trend, though critics warn that Democrats lack unity and have no single cause to rally behind.
That said, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York representative, told CNN: “It’s not just a message about Democrats; it’s a message about our entire country. I think Americans are appalled by what they are seeing coming out of this administration.”
