“The Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum is a comforting and powerful fairy tale known by people all over. Everyone has heard of the adventures of Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion.
The storyline of “Wicked” takes Elphaba’s perspective on how she became the Wicked Witch of the West. It is a beautiful movie which is sure to pull at your heartstrings (unless you are the Tin Man). The first “Wicked” movie received a lot of positive feedback, sparking endless Halloween costumes, trends, dance choreography and vocal challenges. This new movie, “Wicked: For Good,” is doing the same and more.
Stephen Schwartz wrote the movie’s phenomenal soundtrack, which not only helps bring the musical to life, but also brings familiar songs back to the audience. The soundtrack includes songs from Act II of the original “Wicked” musical as well as new songs. Some new songs include Ariana Grande’s “Girl in the Bubble” and Cynthia Erivo’s “No Place Like Home,” which are quickly becoming fan favorites. Some other showstopper songs from the movie include “No Good Deed” and “For Good,” which have beautiful choreography and add emotion.
Part two of “Wicked” focuses on the intense plot of two close friends choosing between friendship or life. Elphaba has become widely feared after her attempts to save the mistreated animals and expose the Wizard. Glinda, left behind by Elphaba, tries to support her perfect image to lift the spirits of the citizens of Oz. Both are constantly in turmoil over what is right and wrong, illustrating classic themes of good vs. evil. This movie really shows how difficult it can be to choose good, demonstrating that not everything is black and white.
While both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have faced some criticism about appearance, I thought Grande played the perfect Glinda. She looked amazing and sounded great on the screen. Playing this role has been a dream of hers for quite some time, and it is easy to see that she enjoyed the opportunity. I really enjoyed seeing all her dresses and costumes, which blended perfectly with the scenery. Cynthia did a fabulous job on her part, hitting difficult notes and phrases perfectly. The actors balance one another’s energy perfectly, creating many comical moments even through struggle.
“Wicked” has been a positive and transformative experience for Ariana Grande. There are noticeable differences in how she sounded before and after performance in the movie. In interviews she participated in, it is easy to see all the training she put into “Wicked.” Having to retrain her voice to a soprano really developed her vocal style for the musical and in general. It was great to see the dynamic between Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
Ever since coming out on Nov. 21, “Wicked: For Good” has soared to popularity; movie theaters are filling up fast. I love watching movies and seeing musicals, so seeing my favorite Broadway musical as a movie perfectly combined two of my favorite things. It is amazing to see “Wicked” gaining recognition through the creation of these films.
