Despite the past bickering, battling and obvious differences in beliefs, President Donald Trump and NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani were on unusually good terms following their meeting in the Oval Office. Months prior, Trump labeled Mamdani as a “communist lunatic,” among other names, and Mamdani has gone after Trump repeatedly, especially in the speech following his victory in the NYC election.
In November, following the election, the two agreed to meet in the White House—a meeting that many believed would go poorly. However, both sides surprised the public by coming out of the meeting with many positive comments.
Trump had plenty of nice things to say about Mamdani. “[We] agree on a lot more than I would have thought,” Trump said. “He wants to have a safe New York… he wants to see houses go up, apartments built…I think this mayor can do some things that are going to be really great.” This is a surprising and stark contrast to the president who once threatened to revoke Mamdani’s citizenship.
Although Trump’s comments were anything but negative, other members of the president’s party were far from shy when calling Mamdani a “communist.”
Mamdani, on the other hand, continued his focus on the goodwill of New Yorkers, as he has done throughout his campaign. According to him, the meeting focused on the “shared focus that we have in serving New Yorkers.” Mamdani called the meeting productive, and focused on his goal of delivering affordability to New Yorkers as the two politicians discussed issues like rent, groceries, utilities and transportation.
Although no one may know how the meeting went so smoothly, it’s certainly a big deal that these two men from opposite sides of the political spectrum were able to come into agreement.
