A man dressed in all black opened fire in a building at Brown University on Saturday, December 13, before escaping off the open campus into the surrounding city of Providence, Rhode Island. Two people were killed and nine more were injured.
Six of the victims are in critical but stable condition. One is critical, one is stable and the ninth has non-life-threatening injuries. At least ten out of the eleven total victims are students.
Reportedly, outer doors of the buildings housing the School of Engineering and physics department were unlocked for final exams at the time of the shooting, which is likely how the gunman entered. However, the classroom doors required a badge for access, so it is unclear how the shooter got further inside.
Over 400 law enforcement officers at local, state and federal levels are searching Providence for the shooter. As of December 13, little further information has been released.
Brown University has been a center of political activism and recently faced controversy over accepting a settlement to restore funding that the Trump Administration had pulled.
The number of school shootings, both in university settings and K-12 schools, has risen sharply in the past several years. This year alone has witnessed at least 70 school shootings nationwide.
The Orange sends condolences to all the families affected by this tragedy.
